Sir, —I apologise to "Student."' :The^ .voting at Hauraki"was:—
•Reform (no fusion) United (fusion) ....
Tho United-lTorbes-Fiision candidate thus polled 74 more votes than I previously credited to him; and your correspondent is very welcome to draw all ,the comfort he ■ can from this fact. But 74 votes make precious little difference to a candidate washed off-the map'by 4023 to 997, and with his own (United) following shrunk to about one-third of what it, was at -the previous election. . .
In United and. Fusionist circles nowa-. days it is not considered good t'vm.even to mention Hauraki; and: "Student," I fear, will be becoming unpopular in those circles. In his efforts to boost Fusion (the United- Government's desperate. SOS), he would therefore be* well-advis-ed to avoid reminding us of' the electors', judgment of the fusion stunt as .revealed' at the' Hauraki election.—l .'am, etc., », '.. , '■■ .'- -::'<- v-
