AT BEST AS A JUMPER

OF ST. SIMON DESCENT

Paris, winner-'of the Wellington Steeplechase on Saturday, has had a comparatively short career over fences, but the results nave teen eminently satisfactory. Prior to taking, on the country, he had raced j bver hurdles for about eight months, for a jingle success at the last Grand National Meeting, and that as the result of a stewards' inquiry, Membo, who finished, aheadiSi him, having crossed him when recover- ' ing after a bad jump at the last fence. He made his debut, as a steeplechaser! at Otauiau in March, and since, then has won three cross-country races in nine further Paris was bred by his owner, Mr. W. T. Hazlett, of Invercargill, and as a yearling was sent "to the late S. Waddell to break in at Greenmeadows.: He was produced only once, at the Napier Park Spring Meeting, as a two-year-old. ■ He was then turned out; and in tha following winter was handed to F. J. M'Kay to train at Invercargill. Last season> as-' a seven-year-old, .he raced on sixteen occasions for two wins in hack races, one.'lbeing at Otautau and the other at the C.J.C. Autumn Meeting. He registered two seconds in open company at the Invercargill Winter Meeting, and then made his debut as a hurdler at:the Dunedin, Winter Meeting/ His. first placed effort in this department was at the last .Wellington Winter-Meeting. OVER FENCES. jEarly in the present season he opened his winning account over fences when he scored in the Spreydon Hurdles on the second, day,at the Grand National-Meeting from Membo and' Gay Fashion: "On the 'first ;day he had been second to LTyii Dv Jnthe-Trial-Hurdles. Subsequently he ran second to-Membo in the Spring Hurdles at the New Zealand Cup Meeting. Early last March he had a short course of country schooling, and was produced in a steeplechase .at Otautau, but. baulked after being stopped by another horse. At his next start he won at an outside price at Rivertpn, ond in. eight races over the timber ijrice he has completed the course on three occasions-for two wins and a:fourth.
