LOWER HOTT PROPOSALS ,Tho Mayor of Lower'Hutt, Mr. W. T.; Strand, reported to his council last evening that ho had been in comniunicationv with the Commissioner of Crown Lands in regard to certain works which could bo carried out under No. 5 unemployment scheme. '.•';■■. The Commissioner had ipromised • to put in hand at ; once a road to connect Bell road with the Waiwetu road, and to have a survey; made with a view to the disposal o£ the -Seepage from the hills at the northern end. of Gracefield road, which is keeping the area at the foot of the hills in a swampy condition. The Mayor stated that ho had also brought before the Commissioner the need for serving the Government property near Gracefield with a sewerage service, the mains and pumping stations wero already in position, and the cost of reticulation would be about £3600, of which £2400 would be for labour. About 40 or 50 per cent, of this work would bo a charge on the Government; and if the whole work were done under No. 5 scheme the cost to the council would be only about £800. The council should be able to find the money for this work. In answer to Councillor Patrick, the Mayor said that the removal of the stormwater was v. charge on the Government, but the sewerage reticulation would be partly borne by the council. The Commissioner was at present considering the matter. The Mayor said he was most anxious to find work in the borough for the unemployed, and on his initiative the council decided to request any ratepayer who had a. suggestion to make for the employment of men on any work, with a minimum cost for material, to place the suggestion before the council.
