EXTENSION URGED

The Lower Hutt Borough Council last evening decided to use every endeavour to influence the Government to put in hand at oucc the work of, extending the Waterloo railway lino to Silvcrstrcam. The council had discussed the question at its previous meeting, and last evening the Upper Hutt Borough Council wrote urging that the Government be asked to cm: ploy men on this work under the No. 5 unemployment scheme. The Mayor, Mr. W. T. Strand, said the matter had his entire support. Such work would bo of real value to the whole community. • The work had to be done, and ho could see no reason why it could not be used to give valuable employment at the present time. Ho was sure that the Government would consent, and would need little urging in the matter.

'. Councillor Wilson considered it wrong in principle that such a work should be carried out by the Public Works Department under the No. 5 scheme. It was not right that such works should be carried out by cheap labour. The Mayor said he could not agree at all with CouncillorWWilsonn n The Government was spending many thousands of pounds on work which was uot showing a sufficient return, and every one in the community was paying for it. Instead of chopping off .corners in roads which would not l)e needed for years hero was the chance of making a good *road and railway which would benefit the whole district.

The council decided to ask for tho support of the Petone Council as well aa the Upper. Hutt Council in urging the Government 'to carry out the work at once. ,
