FRAUD CHARGE FAILS
AN UNEMPLOYMENT CASE
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WANGANUi, This Day. An interesting c^se.'was' dealt with to-day "before the Magistrate (Mr. Salmon) when a Maori, Ruby William Matthews, was charged that with intent to defraud he obtained from the Unemployment Board three ■ separate aniounts of £-1 17s,6d.by moans of a false pretence, by falsely representing that he was married ana. supporting a wife and two children.
The evidence disclosed that the defendant had no dependants, and was in receipt of a war pension of £3 4s per. month. , Mr. W. J. Treadwell contended that there was no contract "between the defendant and the Unemployed Board, and the money was secured not as thp result of a false pretence, but for work. Work was not capable of being stolen. . -•
The Magistrate said it was clear that the defendant did not obtain the money by falso pretences. He obtained only th cright to work. The onJy. tiling the defendant was guilty of was obtaining a contract or service by false representation., He dismissed the information, and suggested that .the amend,ect ono mighi be laid.
