The New Zealand cricketers enjoyed a batting triumph against Lancashire at Liverpool to-day. At the close of play the visitors had made ■'110 runs for the loss of nine wickets. The weather was fine and tlic wicket perfect. The attendance was SOOO. The teams were: — . New Zealand: Weir, Mills, Vivian, Lowry, Dempster, James, Page, Mcrritt, Cromb, Talbot, -Blunt. Lancashire: Eckorslcy, Hallows, W.. Ifon-ocks, E. Tyldesley, Iddon, Hopwood, Paynter, Taylor, Sibblcs, Duckworth, Hodgson. Lowry won the toss, and Now Zealand started badly, Dempster being caught in the slips as the result of a half-hearted shot. Mills was .then caught after hooking a short ball, the score being 21 for two wickets. Blunt' and Vivian retrieved matters. The former batted steadily, playing well on the offside until ho snicked Sibblcs into the hands of the wicket-keeper, Duckworth. Vivian was dismissed shortly after lunch, by a running catch in the outfield, lid gave a lino display of clean hitting and improved defence. TINE PARTNERSHIP. Talbot started brightly until ho Kit a skier, which was. taken by a running catch at mid-off. A fine partnership followed between ■Weir and Page, who added 109 for the sixth wicket. Neither took unnecessary risks, and both faced all tho bowlers with confidence. Pago was dismissod, when attempting to forcV the paco after tea by a high left-hand •catch. Partnered by Lowry, Weir continued to bat confidently, reaching his century in 186 minutes before ho chased- a ball outside tho off stump. He gave a chancp at srfuare-leg when 86. ' Cromb was dismissed in tho same manner as Weir, and Lowry and James proceeded to take toll «i! tho tired bowling.' .'■■/ ' LOWRY AGGRESSIVE. ■ Lowry was particularly aggressive, shots, through tho covers with an occasionally lusty on-drive. ' ■ Ho attempted to score sixteen in the final over to complete his century. Ho hit two fours; but,was then bowled off his pads, Ho gavo Bcvc'ral chances,, which failed.to mar a magnificent display.
