AT A BIG DIVIDEND
MARTIAN CHIEF SCORES
: Bett6rs stuck to the form horses in ttie To Aro Handicap, in spite of the obvious magnitude of the task that confronted their heavily-weighted nominees in such going as ruled for tlic last vace of the day, and in doing' so they courted misfortune. Two of the minimum"division/Martian.Chief mid Arrowzonei made all of the running, and they finished lengths out in. irpiiO of any-
thing'else. Both horses-.ire trained on the course, and their dividends were substan-' tiiil, that of the winner, Martian Chief, being very little short of a score, and much tlie best price duriug the day, The field was sent off to the smartest dispatch of the day, and Arrow/one raced away well clear of Martian Chief, Hiss" Chatter, Adventus, and Seneschal. There was no change at the half-mile, where Nightmare and The Smuggler wore handiest of the others. Arrowzone came back to Martian Chief on the turn, and tho last-named, hanging to the rail, ran into tho lead at the straight entrance. . Ho increased his advantage to the distance, but a little further .on Arrowzone raised a fresh effort and had retrieved all except a length of the leeway by the time the post was reached....The pair, had the finish to themselves, the. third horse, Nightmare, beioß six lengths away, followed by Semper Paratus, Adventus, Punchestowii, Miss Chatter, and The, Smuggler. The winner is a three-year-old chestnut geiding by Chief. Ruler; from Equitasjs Martian1 daughter,', Martianette, and is thus very closely related ;to Oratress,' Oratrix, Concentrate, and other notable-per-formers. He was purchased by his owner, Mr./.K-.'J.: Murphy,'at the 1929 yearling sales - for 575, guineas, but developed strangles, when taken ,to Australia that year, and his life was despaired of for nearly twelve months. . Returned to training in tTanuary'last, he'quickly1 came'to hand, and "won his first race at Tauherenikaii at Kaster. .-He stays on well; and should later prove successful, at longer, distances. Arrowzone looked to be finished .'.in ; the straight, as he has been in all his recent races, but he made a bold recovery at the end. It would seem that. his distance is well bfiyond the sprint. Nightmare managed the vgoing. but her weight anchored her. Semper Paratus. finished strongly, and may be doing better at the meeting. Adventus failed to run'on.' The Smuggler was never dangerous, nor was The- Sun, who was always toiling near the back. .
