EASY FOR LORD VAL

HACKS' SIX FURLONGS

The AVoburn Handicap proved the best of good things for ,the favourite, Lord Val, who simply played with Iho opposition I from start to finishd. Eeka Kaurau [led him for the first furlong or so, but he had taken charge before they crossed over on t6 the course proper, with Reka Raurau; Wild Country/and Water Power,-well clear of everything else. He' ma.Ai no race of the final couple of furlongs, and after drawing out,to a safe margin came home without needing a touch nearly four lengths ahead of Water Power, who was easily the best of the rest. Wild Country was a good two, lengths, further back third, and Shootist and Reka Raurau were next. .After a gap came Grand Acre, Normandy, and Navaho, followed by Azure, Valrewa, and ■ Blue Heaven some, distance' away. Lord Val is a four-year-old brown geld-ing-by Valkyrian, and he is trained by his owner (Mr. J. Clothier) at Matamata. His last race was at the J3reat Northern Meeting, when he-dead-Tieated with Pcwa in the Eitzrpy Handicap, and the 'merit of that performance was subsequently shown by the good form later, produced by. Catoma and Little Doubt, who were behind the *dead-heaters on that .occasion. In his present form another, race at the meeting looks likely to o.omo his way. Water Pojver was also well supported, and withp'lit the winner in-the field she would have scored as easily as ho did.' She is another to b« ticked off. Shootist and the well-bred ; Normandy (who was sent out .second favourite) may do belter before the meeting closes'. ' x ■
