SINGLETON SUCCEEDS.

THE fTRENTHAM HURDLES

Singleton, who showed attractive form at the' Great Northern Meeting without being in the money, was much, superior to most o£ the opposition in the Trentham Hurdle Handicap, and lie won very decisively after giving - first-class exhibition of fencing. Ho was always going smoothly, and ivhen he began his) main effort in the back stretch he did not take long, to reach, the front. There,be stayed for tho'rest of thb race,'and 'his1 supremacy pver the final stages was never' Seriously menaced. ' • . ' i. Cristobel and/Prince Lv made play for a mile''i'tom Pull. Mark, Apache, Singleton, "Make Up, Conjurer 11., Membo, and | Carinthia, with- Amorist last, but in' the back stretch Singleton put in a fast-run along; the outside, and had charge at .the half-mile. Conjurer 11. wasl also improv- ! iug his position ' steadily, but Prince Lv I was falling back. Entering the straight Singleton was "out'clear from Cristobel, Conjurer 11., Apache, and Full Mark, but the last-named then ran through,'and waa next over the final fence after the leader. Full Mark lodged "a challenge in the run down to the post, but Singleton needed only a reminder to hold his rival at bay, and he beat him home easily by three lengths: Conjurer 11. was six lengths back' third, and Membo was another four length* further away. Then came Apache, Cristobel, Carinthia, and Prince Lv, with MakeUp and Amorist bringing up the rear. It was rather surprising to find the public making a firm favourite of Amorist, who had had only a single race recently after a spell, and it was to be expected that ho would be up near the front most of the way. Not only was ho not, however, but he was always lant, and finished in that inglorious position. Apache and Criritobel, the next in demand, went fair laces, but they had ovory chance, and were not good enough. Knll_ Mark stayed on well, and must be considered one of the likely, lightweights in the .Winter Ifurdles with 9.6. 01b less tlian ho carried on Saturday. Conjurer 11. should improve with the race, as he had not h,id much work lately. Prince Lv weakened under his bifr weight before half the race was over. Nevertheless, the going would hardly have suited him, and ho may do better Inter on at the meeting.' The weight was also tpo much for Make Up. .Membo wild finishing better than most of them, and Carinthia's effort should not'be taken too much notice of, as the distance was too short for him.
