RUGBY LEAGUE

NEWTOWN WIN EASILY

In the Rugby League matches at the Winter Show Stadium on Saturday Newtown A scored an easy win over City, and Petone were successful in their match, against Old Boys.

City started off against Newtown in a manner which indicated that they were going to provide stout opposition, and Newtpwn were.called upon to spend some time on the defensive. It.was not long before Newtown established a definite superiority, however, and the first of their points came from a try by Holmes after the backs had handled in turn. The Newtown backs continued to work effectively, and after Awatere had scored a try wide out, Holmes broke clean away and outpaced the opposition to score. Harris converted both, these tries, the score at the interval being Newtown 13, City 0. Newtowri again had the upper hand in the second spell, and their account was improved with tries by Russell and Fraser, Holmes converting both. The final score was Newtown A 23, City 0. Mr. O'Grady was the referee.

Petone and Old Boys proved to be very evenly matched, and there were only threo points between them at the finish. There was plenty of tight work in the early play, variety being occasionally introduced by the Petone backs, who handled in some passing rushes but failed to break through the defence,. A dribbling rush put Petone on attack, and they opened the scoring with a goal by Kelly from a penalty kick near the posts. An Old Boys offensive was checked, and Petone retaliated with a passing bout, which sent T. Love over for a try. Before half-time Old Boys scored an unconverted try by Richards, and at half-time Petone led 5-3. During the second spell Jones scored an unconverted try for Petone, and Davies kicked a penalty goal for Old Boys. Although there was plenty of keenness in the play there was no further scoring, and the game ended Petone 8, Old Boys 3. The referee was Mr. P. Childs.
