BERHAMPORE v. MIRAMAR.
The meeting of Berhampore and Miraraau at the Miramar Polo Grounds, while by no means productive of good football, was sufficiently, even to sustain the interest of a large number of spectators who during the course of the game, which was won by Berhampore by 16 points to 11, were given the .opportunity of subscribing to, a collection taken up in aid of the local unemployment fund. The teams were:—
Berhampore: Brettis; Kingy Gordon, ■Lang; ' Diamond, Knudson; ■ Macauley; Glennie; Mollier, Charles, Martin, Miller, Gaii", Cameron, Fraser.
Miramar: Athea: Bennett, Condliffe 2 Parfitt; W. Smith, Thompson; R. Smith; Davidge; Kay, Murray, Pinkerton, Hall, Crook, Taylor, Jackson..
Although both teams fielded strong forwards, and in spite of the fact that neither side possesses a very effective back line, it was surprising to see the reliance thatr both Berhampore and Miramar placed on their rearguards. Time and again the forwards of both teams would be swept back from attack to desperate defence when their backs attempted to handle the greasy ball. On both sides the tackling was weak, so that attack and counter-attack followed in quick succession. Davidge, an opportunist at wing-forward, was a thorn in the side of the Berhampore defence. Mollier and Charles did not supply Berhampore with quite so much of the ball as usual. Miramar were the first to open their account, Bennett, after a clinking run, sending the ball on to Davidge, who scored a try which Pinkerton converted. Miramar 5-0. Shortly afterwards Lang, in attempting to inaugurate a passing rush with the'| greasy ball when on defence, let Davidge in. Pinkerton's kick was unsuccessful. Miramar 8-0. Berhampore then set to work in earnest, and Miramar had to sustain some smashing forward attacks. Tries were scored by Gordon and Knudson, the latter player converting his; and the halftime score was 8-8. Thompson, who had received a knock on the head, was replaced by Algar. After ,a long spell of up-and-down play Miller scored a try, which Knudson converted. Berhampore 13-8. Pinkerton made Miramar's chances look brighter by adding three points to their total with a splendid kick taken right out by the side-line. There was much excitement as Miramar strove hard to get a grip on the game, but just before no-side Knudson made things safe for Berhampore with a penalty kick. The final score was: Berhampore 16, Miramar 11. Mr. A. de Clifton was the referee.
