A torrential thunderstorm at tho height of the festivities compelled tho abandonment of the garden party at Holyrood Palace. The guests rushed to the gates to board trams and omnii buses and scrambled to shelter.- Paraj sols were useless, and dresses, summer I hats, and silk hats were ruined.. .Their Majesties returned to the Palace from, the tea marquee, but the Duke 'and Duchess of York and members of their suite were caught in the downpour. Thousands of spectators were drenched. Guests' clothes were estimated to havo cost £100,000, and the damage is assessed at £50,000. .
