COURT RETURNS
During the last quarter a slightly greater volume of civil business was dealt with at the Magistrate's Court than in the corresponding period last ■ year. The differences were not very great iv individual eases, but in most instances slight increases were shown. The figures for the quarter, with the return for the corresponding period for last year in parentheses were as follows: — Number of plaints entered, 3734 (3431); total amount sued for, £71,758 17s Gd (£63,803 18s 6d); number of cases tried. 2044 (1938); total amount claimed, £41.----276 5s 2d (£40,392 15s lid); total amount recovered, £37,081 Is lid (£34,947 5s 8d); total sittings, 123 (109); civil cases tried, 144 (142); applications heard, 351 (212); distress warrants isssued, 425 (385); judgment summonses issued, 658 (538); warrants of committal issued, 75 (77); writs of arrest issued, 1 (5); total summonses and processes served by bailiffs 2087 (1990); warrants executed by bailiffs, 267 (262); summonses served by registered letter, 196 (ICO). . •• .
