AMATEUR SPORT
FURTHERING, THE CAUSE
Various meetings of representatives of sports bodies have been held throughout the Dominion recently in connection with the campaign to have New Zealand adequately represented at the next Olympic Games, and to place the future development of amateur sport upon a,rounder footing than in the past. The necessity for making preparations well ahead of the date of sending representatives overseas, either to the Games or to other important gatherings, was stressed, as also was the value of being represented at such gatherings. New Zealand's reputation as ; a [country capable of producing champions iv the field of sport was being enhanced.by the Dominion's cricket repi'esentatives, and high honours had .long since been won by the Rugby footballers, while notable achievements had been made in other branches of sport. The next big opportunity for a display by the combined forces of New Zealand's amateur sports bodies would be at Los Angeles next year. As pointed out. by Mr. H. Amos, chairman of the New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games Association, in addressing the recent meetings, it was hoped that rowing, boxing, athletics, cycling, and swimming would all be able to furnish representatives for the Games. Finance was the big problem, but it was expected that the "Big Windfall" art union, which closes to-morrow, would be supported so well by the jiublie that not only, would adequate representation at the next Games bft. assured but, there would also be established a fund to further the .causte of sport in thb future.
