Discussing the position, regarding relief works in the city with a "Post" reporter to-day, the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said that perhaps there was some misunderstanding about the capacity of the council to find employment, for actually there was*plenty oil work ahead, provided that funds were madeavailable to the,council to keep the men employed. Though there were at present no works of great magnitude in hand, there was a considerable number of fuir-sized and small jobs which between them employed at the end of last week—which was the latest dato for which ho had figures on hand—l 393 mon, of whom 012 wero in A class, 004 in, B class, and 177 wero in C class, 'flic .total'for tho previous week was 1543. -

The majority of tho- city works, suid Mr. Hislop, were useful road-widening and allied works, with, of'course, tho continuation of the- fairly big',job on the Hataitai recreation ground and further sand levelling work at - Bongotai. ■■■:-.' - . . ' .

' B class; Bongotai, 95; Corporation yards, 07; Wilton block, 93; Mount Cook, 02; Barnard street widening, 33; Hai'dot sstroet, 3S; Russell terrace,,s3, C class: Happy Valley road, 24; Hataitai recreation' ground, .81; Bolleston street, 57. - Mr. Hislop stated that negotiations with regard to a recommencement of western aud eastern necoss works were proceeding, iii. very promising fashion, and,ho hoped to bo ablo within a few days to'make, a stateniout regarding recommencement, probably on the westera access, with the tunnel - work to follow a little later.
