"MORE THAN GESTURE"
A BRIGHTER OUTLOOK
"I think this is more than a mere complimentary gesture; it is a frank recognition of the place that New Zealaud lias won for itself in the cricketing world," said Mr. P. B. Broad, chairman of tho Wellington Cricket Association, on learning of the decision to give the New Zealand cricket team two more Tests with England on the present tour. "Tho generous and ungrudging way in which the sporting public in England, the counties, and the M.C.C. have united to make the rearrangement of the tour possible makes a big call on our gratitude. The importance of these two Tests from the financial point of view cannot bo overestimated. Tho last tour of England cost approximately £10,00" and this cue canuofc cost less. A cablegram from the chairman of the New Zealand Council a week ago stated that the takings to date were £'4000, so that with two Tests to come and some very good county gates, there is every chance of tho tour paying for itself, leaving intact the substantial sum derived from the art union. This will enable the council to arrange with confidence for more overseas tours both to and from New Zealand, and that is tho one thing that New Zealand cricket really wants.
"■As regards our prospects in the last two Tests," Mr. Broad added, "I am still optimist enough to believe that New Zealand will not be beaten."
