The first figures of tho Census taken on 26th April have been issued by the Registrar-General and show that the total population in. England and Wales'| is 39,!M8,000 —an increase since the last Census (taken in 1021), of 2,061,----000. . ' - ' i'emales preponderate, their, number | being 20,500,000, and the density of the population is 655 persons for ■ each square mile. ■ • •. ' j The population of Scotland is 4,800,000, making a total for Great Britain of nearly 45,000,000. The tables show the number of births registered to be 6,930,000, compared with 8,281,000 in tho 1921 Census. The 1931 figure is the lowest recorded since 1881. The death rate also is lower. The Census reveals a growth in the population of London, which is now more than 8,000,000 with a tendency for the outer suburbs to increase at the expense of the County of London area. With the so-called outer ring the total population of London reaches 12,000,000. ' i
