District Nurses' Appeal,
Tho sisters of tho District Nursing Guild of St. John would be; very grateful fpr blankets or other warm bed coverings. Just now they find many destitute sick, some with, scarcely any bod coverings, and often without night attiro. These articles would be greatly appreciated if loft at the surgery, 106, Courtenay place.1 "Women's Institute. Mrs.,G. A*. Monk presided at tho-re-cent meeting oi! the Keikiorangi Women's Institute, there being about 40 members present. .Jilombers of the Paraparaunm Institute provided the programme for the afternoon., Mrs. Sutherland gave a most interesting demonstration .of wool weaving, displaying many specimens of Shetland knitting, the fine work and intricate designs being particularly, admired. Mrs. E. B. Hands sang a "Weaving Song" to demonstrate the old-fashioned manner of singing at work. Mrs. Kelso road an amusing short story, entitled "Terrible Trouble Down Here." The prizewinner for the competition (home-made soft slippers) was Mrs. T. W. Brown, Miss S. Carter and Mrs. C. Wootton being second and third, respectively. A group competition .(singing nursery rhymes) brought an' interesting afternoon to a close. The hostesses were Mesdames S. Clifton and S. Wilton and Misses E. and J. Smith., Last week a social and dance, organised by the social committee of the institute, was largely attondod. The first part of, the evening was devoted to organised games, competitions, and items. A'one-act play, entitled "Cupid in tlio- Kitchen," was well'performed by Misses M. Campion, IT. Kent, and V. Meyer. After supper, dancing tookplace, and the singing of, "Auld Lang Syne" brought a thoroughly enjoyable evening to a close. Staff Dance. A very enjoyable evening was spent recently when the Texas Co. (Aust.), Ltd., held their annual staff dance, in the Adelphi Cabaret. Tho cabaret present: ed a scene of much gaiety, haying been, doeorated for the occasion with hundreds of- g&s-filled balloons. Paper hats, streamers, and novelties added, to the carnival spirit which pervaded tho dance rooms. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Kaula, the latter wearing white moire, Mr. and Mrs. P. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Julian Poster, Mr. and Mrs. W. Watson, Dr. and Mrs. John Plimmer, Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Kuhn, Mr. and Mrs. H. Or. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Metzgcv, Mr. and Mrs. Ahl, Mr. and Mrs. P. Williams, Mr. and Mrs:. K. W. M'Gauly, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Colcman, Mr. and Mrs. W. Eussoll, Mr. and Mrs. T..Toward, Mi', and Mrs. B. Millier, Mr. and Mrs. S. List, Mr, and Mrs. W. E. An interesting interlude was mado in. the evening's programmo by an American syncopated tap dance given by Miss Muriel Wilton, and a dance duo by Trevor and Dawn. Tho arrangements wero 'in the capable hands of the following committee:— Misses C. Young, N. Wright, M. Oakos, Messrs. L. Dawkins (ehairnia.ii), D. Gane, C. W. Haines, W. Pringle, and X., Ames (hon. secretary). . ■ Pleasant Interludes. : Amo.ng the pleasant interludes in the business part of the opening of the Women's Division Conference yesterday morning, was-a delightful song,, the "Ash Grove," sung by Mrs. M'Lepd, a Welsh song, sung in compliment to ■Her Excellency Lady Bledisloe. ■ It was much appreciated by all present, and Her Excellency remarked how pleasant it was to hear a Welsh song, and to know that tho ancient language, and music wero not being altogether -. forgotten. There were a number of lovely violets in bouquets and posies. Mrs.' C. 0. Jackson told Her Excellency that these wore all "home grown" by members of the division, many of whom were enthusiastic gardeners. Many kind things were said about the "youngest branch," represented by Mrs,. M'ln>. tosh, and she had the privilege of presenting the bouquet to Lady Bledisloe. The expression used by; Mrs. Jackson, in addressing Her Excellency, was that "the welcome offered was a sincere, loyal, and loving one." Lady Bledislqe expressed her appreciation of the sentiment. '.■■.:'■ -■■■' . ■ Dramatic Entertainment, . - A programme arranged by Miss Har-dinge-Maltby will be presented by the Dramatic Circle of the Lyceum Club on Saturday evening in the club.rooms. Miss Maltby herself will take" several parts, .and all who havo enjoyed her previous performances, will look for? ward to Saturday night's programme. Two one-act plays* and some recitations will be given, by members of the Dramatic Circle, the Whole, being produced by Miss Maltby, who will also; be in charge of the costuming.' A particularly enjoyable evening is anticipated. . . '
