ON NON-PARTY LINES

UNEMPLOYMENT BILL

"NO OPEN CHEQUE"

While he is not prepared to give the House an "open cheque," the Prime Minister intends to allow the Unemployment Amendment Bill to be dealt with by Parliament on non-party lines. When questioned persistently on the subject by the Leader of the Labour Party (Mr. H. E. Holland) in the House of Representatives yesterday, Mr. Forbes said ho 'had assurances from .members on all sides of the House that they were willing to assist the Government in dealing with the unemployment problem. "But with this particular Bill?" asked a Labour, member. Mr. Holland: "Will the Prime Mhi-1 ister make it a non-party matter?" "I don't intend to make it a party measure," replied the Prime Minister. "At the same time I recognise that the question of Unemployment is too serious to let it go by without making financial provision for it." Mr. Holland: "Will the Prime Minister leave the matter in tho hands of the House, and accept whatever the House decides?" The Prime Minister: "That is giving an open cheque. (Laughter.) "While I have every confidence in the House and the judgment and common-sense of its members, I don't like leaving an open cheque." . ■ A ■voice: "One of your own. will do."
