UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY
prompt. payment essential
"Prompt payment of tho levy is essential,"'said Mr. P. H. Kinsman, of the Labour Department, when prosecuting a number ok defendants in the Magistrate's Comrt yesterday for failure to pay one a r more instalments of tho unemploymeu t levy. Mr. Kinsman said he did note think that there had been deliberate attempts on the part of tho defendants to evade the payments of tho levy,, and' in most cases "the excuse of forg.'e'tfulncss or carelessness was probably correct. It was hardly possible for anyone, particularly in Wellington, n0t,.1:0 be impressed with the seriousness oil the position. Delay in payment of the levy meant additional work on tihe part of the Post Office, the Labour Department, and the police, which all added considerably to the cost of administration of the scheme. All the defendants had now paid the levy, but' the payment had not been made until they had been interviewed by a police officer.
There were six defendants, and each was fined 10s and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution..
