OBITUARY

CAPTAIN T. H. CHUDLEY

That a prominent and esteemed figure had been removed by the sudden death on Wednesday of Captain Thomas H. Chudley, marine superintendent in New Zealand for the' Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, was evident from the large number of nautical aiid business men who attended the funeral this morning.

A memorial service was conducted in St. Peter's Church, by the Eev. A. T. Bristed Page, of Miramax, and the organist was Mr. S. B. Shortt, who played the."Dead March" from "Saul." The chief mourners at tho church were Miss Hilda Chudloy and Mrs. Andrew Murie, daughters of the deceased. The pallbearers at the church were Captain J. Spencc, harbourmaster; Captain W. Whiteford, of tho Marino Department; Captain G. Knowles, president of the Merchant Service Guild; Captain G. Williams, of the m.v. Coptic; Captain A. P. Gibson, of the Merchant Service Guild; and Mr. E. Darroch, secretary of the Navy League. A Masonic burial sorvico was afterwards conducted at the Crematorium, Karori, where the following members of the order acted as pall-bearers: Dr. C. E. Adams, and Messrs. C. A. Lawrence, J. W. Jack, A. H. Hollis, E. B. Bevan (New Zealand representative of the S.S. and A. Co.), and C. 'G. H. Eobinson.

Among those present were Messrs. James Findlay, New Zealand representative of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, F. AY. Prince and F. A. Turner, and Captain E. S. Lewis, marine superintendent at Auckland for the company (representing the Shaw, Savill Company), Messrs. C. J, B. Norwood, chairman of th'o board, J. Marehbanks, general manager, and D. G. Gibbs, treasurer and acting-secretary, and Captains A. V. Hale Monro, traffic manager, and P. S. Peterson, acting-as-sistant harbourmaster (representing tho Wellington Harbour Board); Mr. G. C. Godfrey, secretary, and Captains G. P. Hall, Superintendent of Mercantile Marine) and A. S. Gibson, Chief Surveyor of Ships (representing the Marine Departinent)j Messrs. J. H. C. Bond, Dominion superintendent, C. M. Turrell, traffic manager, and Captain W. 01----phert, marine superintendent (representing the New Zealand Shipping Company); Mr. W. Eobinson, H. Buck, L. Goldfinch, A. 11. Miles, W. Gray Young, C. A. Lawrence, F. D. Thomson, A. N. Thomson, 11. D. Thomson, Alex. Smith, C. G. Wilson, C. W. Tringham, F. H. Owen, W. A. Armour, J. T. Grose, B. Anderson, P. Versehaffclt, C. W. Treadwell, and many others. Tho late Captain Chudloy, who was in his 62nd year, was born at Liverpool, and joined the Shaw,.Savill Company as a .-junior officer in 1890. His first command was that of the Maori, and later he successively was captain of the steamers Eangatira, Kia Ora (1907), and Pakchii. He was appointed marine superintendent in May, 1915, and held that position until his death. Captain Chudley has been identified with the work of tho Navy League for many years, and held tho office of president till last year. Ho loaves a widow and five daughters—Mrs. Muric, of Seatoun; Miss H. Chudley, and three younger daughters.
