LABOUR LAND TAX
LIBERAL AMENDMENT
POLITICAL SITUATION
VIEWS MORE OPTIMISTIC
UNDERSTANDING LIKEL^
| [British Official Wireless.) (Received 15th June, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, 13th June. More optimistic views are ex* pressed in the Press regarding tho political situation arising out of tho Government's resistance to the Lib" eral amendment to its land taxation proposals. Yesterday's conference between Ministers ancl Liberals has, according i» the "Daily Herald," eased the crisis. Somo progress towards agreement was ma do, and it is hoped that as a result of further consultations a basis of agreement will bo reached on Monday, Belief that a" way. out of.tho difficulty will bo found persists generally in Labour quarters. It is shared by the "Daily Mail," "Daily News," and .the "Daily Telegraph." The "Daily; News," however, says that tho position is still extremely delicate. The "Daily Express" makes light of tha difficulties which it believes will be solved by tho Liberals' redrafting their amendment in acceptable terms, and the "Morning Post" also anticipates that an escape will be found in. this way from a crisis which, it says, has now been reduced to a mere misunderstanding. PINDING A rOBMULA. The "Times" says that in view of yesterday's talk which ended in a failure to agreo on reasonable) alternative words for the amendment it is possibla that the final decision will not be taken on Tuesday when tho disputed clause is duo for consideration in tho House of Commons, and that a few more dayi may be gained in which to find a formula.
Tho "Manchester Guardian" sees in valid 'reason why a way out oJ: the difficulty should not bo found. It suggests that during Tuesday's debate tha Chancellor of tho Exchequer will ridicule the amendment, but that later in the debate,, the Prime Minister whila stating his opposition to it, will offer to consider a recommendation before the report stage of the Bill is reached. In such a case, it adds, there is little doubt that the Liberal leader would accept tho overture. Meanwhile, hewever, there <is a deadlock.
