NOTES ON THE . RACING

; (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening .Post.") . . .' CJIRISTCHURCH, .13th June. The Winter Heeling oi' Ibc Ashburtou Trotting Club was held lv bright, simshine, after a dull, foggy morning. The track "was in good order, aud the large fields provided some capital racing. The totalisator investments were £14,873 10s, compared with £18,426 Jast year. ..:• ■

The Trial Handicap fonnd backers making, a good start. Kuin was a prominent favourite, and after trailing Golden Harvest to the home turn he went on to win easily. Tatsy de Oro, after being prominent all the way, stayed on to get third, close up, with Master-Don close.up fourth,; The winner is a three-year-old by ;Wrack from Paradox, and she carried the colours of Mr, G. H. Nicol), son of the president of the Asbbnrton Trotting Club and the Trotting Conference. This was Ruin's; first. success, but lie :wUI get more. Interest in the race was spoilt by an accident. After tho field had .gone <v turloug, Red Glover fell, bringing down Logon Fraser, Ainivrorthy, Warbird, Jester, and .Gunfire, while Symmetry . also got into the bunch of fallen horses, and several Mother, .horses--bad to lie pulled -up. D. Withers sustained a slight, concussion, and could not drive, again-during the day, but the other drivers escaped without serious injury. ■

. Edith Voyage, was a. hot favourite for the Longbeaeh Handicap, but she went off on a tangle, losing so much ground that her chauce looked hopeless.---She was in third place when the" straight was reached, and got up on the post to beat Fairyland .by a head, with Lucky Voyage half a length away. The winner's performance was very impressive, and she will be in good company next season, as she is only five years oldv'.and liable to improve a lot. The Ashburton. County Handicap was an interesting'race.1: The' Satin KingGreat Logan bracket was the hottest fancy seen in a big handicap foi- a-long time. Satin King aiid Steel All led Sunny Bob, Wrackeen, Pageant, and Avenger for a mile and a half. Satin. King then took charge, while Rollo also made his appearance. Rollo threw out a strong challenge in the straight, but Satin King stalled him off. Sunny Bob came with a, late run, Satin King beating him by half a length, while Rollo.was less than a length away, -with Pageant a length further back. Satin King %as expensive when he broke at Canterbury I'avk, but he. won in fine style here, leaving no doubt that he is a high-grade pacer. The. Ashburton-trained bracket, Giro and .Tempest, was easily favourite for the Sapling Stakes. ■. Ciro went to a tangle early, and .never got near the front. May Chenault and Tempest were soon showing, tho' -way, with - Silver -de ■ Oro -and Gold Paper next. These four led the field :home,r-.tl:iQugh "notjVthe same order. May Chenault tired -in the straight, and Silver de Oro outstayed ..Tempest, "to • win by a length "did:'a -half.' Ma'y'Clienflult was' two lengths away, with- Gold Paper close up. The winner, who was having her first race, was trained and driven by S. A. Edwards;' --She is -small,, but has .plenty, of Bpeed,'':and sticks on. Tempest-is a' solid-ifiwstoiner, and .as Ciro, has;the.reputation^of being; eveiv better, hejwill make, ameiialfi later on for his" failure, to go : smoo'tliTy in the first furloiig/, of the; classic. V-. There: was an exciting finish in the, Acton- '.Handicap. Pink Sugar and; Logalcen led early, but at. the-end of, half a :mile Pink Sugar was'joined by Ayrmorit Chimes, who drew'clear a little, further-, on/ having a lead of se\ Tcral lengths! at;.the:%n.trance to the straight, .where' ■KeW QififancT Maurice Dillon ivcre iiext, Mth':sKelp>*hah'dy and Lily Harold;/clo3-:]iig;!-%^,;giter & slow start;.: Ayrmont-■Chimes-Mred-over the final furlong,: andLily, Harold got lip on the post to. beat NettavOro by:-;, a neck. Kelp was a. length'away. ■ .... • . ' . ■:• Sir Voyage was a pronounced favourite for the Stewards' Handicap, and after going off slowly, he looked a winner some distance from home. King Oscar led Great Nelson and Repute early. Mountain.Mistwas second half/a mile from home, and led^King Oscar: to the straight, with.Sir Voyage handy.' Tomkinson drove a very confident race, and only beat Mountain Mist by a good head. Sir, Voyage has bad two starts in the Dommion tor two wins,- and he is.going to.reach the best, ujilioppled "company early next season, as there is no doubt he is a high-grade trot"eTlie tjiree-yeat-old' filly, Avethiisa, was av^io'tfavourfte-for the Winter 'Handicap. Editor and' Wild Voyage led Sodium, early, while Arethusa was soon m fourth place. She joined Editor in front at the home tui-mv.-with. H E. Nicoll's stable provided a hot tavourite in the Farewell-Handicap, this time -with Broken. She went off badly, and •later put in a break.
