To Bet Colours
Before washing coloured clothes the first time, it is always desirable to set the colours, advises a correspondent. This may be accomplished by the use of a mordant similar to that used by the dyer. For browns, blacks, and pinks, two cwpfuls of.salt dissolved inone gallon of water should ..be used. For blues, half cupful vinegar to one gallon water, or one tablespoonful of alum dissolved in one gallon of waters For lavender, use one "tablespoonf ul of sugar-of-lead dissolved in each gallon of water. Sugar-of-lead should ,be handled carefully, and " immediately afterwards thrown away, as it is a poison. Prepare thedfixing bath in any large receptacle that will not cause rust, and leave the garment there overnight, completely covered with the solution. In the morning rinse the cloth well with clear water, and, without wringing, hang it out to dry in tho shade. When almost dry, press oil the wrong siclO; :
