PETER AND AUDREY'S TREASURE

Peter and Audrey were twins, and they were both eight years old. Their mother and father were poor, and they lived in a tiny cottage on the coast of New Zealand. One day while their father had gone to town to see if he could get any work, the mother and children stayed home. Suddenly Peter said, "Mother, can Aubrey and I go down on the beach, for I am tired of waiting for father." "Yes, all right, dears,'* said mother, "but do not get into mischief." So the two went down on ,the beacS and looked^ around. Then Peter pointed to a cave which he saw ur the .distance. "Let's go and explore the cave," he said. He took Audrey by, the hand and they both faced along the beach till they came to the cave. It seemed quiet, so they went in. Luckily Peter found a torch on. the ground, and he picked it up and lit it. Then they went down the long dark passages at the caves. \ . Suddenly Peter, who was leading the way, stopped. "Look, Audrey," h» cried, "here is a box." Then Audrey, said, "Do you know what's in itf" "No," said Peter,*: "but if you hold this torch I'll see." So Audrey took the torch while Pete*, unstrapped the box, and oh—what » sight met his eyesl Gold—gold way in. the box! He showed Audrey jt, and she clapped her hands in glee. "Let's take it home," said Peter. So Audrey, and Peter lifted up the box ,which they found very heavy. "I suppose we'll manage it," said Peter. When they reached home they aair father. "Look what we have found!" cried Audrey. So father looked in, and to Peter's and Audrey's surprise he said, "Why; it must be the treasure that my father left."
