OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

FIRST ROUND RESULTS LEADING, PLAYERS (Received 4th June, 11 a.m.) LONDON, 3rd June. The first round of tho open golf championship took placo to-day. Another round will bo played to-morrow, after which the leading sixty players, including those tying for the sixtieth place, will play two rounds on Cth June. The loaders are: Farrcll, Cotton, Twine, 72; Armour, 73; Sarazen, Large, Alliss, Okc, Dalcmagne, 74; Havers, Macdonald-Smith, Kirkwood, Genta, K. Whiteombe, 75; Boomer, Jurado, Stewart, Donaldson, Hunter, Churio, 76; Mitchell, Horton-Smith, Turnesa,. Hodson, Compston, 77; M'Minn, Duncan, Easter brook, 78; Ray, Burton, Dobson, E. Whitcombe, 79; O. Whitcombe, Robson, Holland, 80; Hirigoyen, Manero, 82. The Australian, Stewart, is among eight with 7G, above whom are eighteen competitors. Macdonald-Smith fell away from his excellent play in the qualifying rounds, and took 39 out owing to numerous visits to the bunkers. Cotton was brilliant, and is regarded as Britain's chief hope. The first round of the championship proper was played in a-.boisterous wind. Stewart was one of the few players who judged it well. He played the first nine in 3G, including two 2's.
