AN AIM AND AN EXAMPLE
There Is a great and pressing need for funds and clothing lo relieve the distress of people who are suffering through unemployment. YolunLary relief organisations arc doing their host to lessen this distress, but they find much more is needed than they can supply. .An appeal has, therefore, been made for further help. There can be no doubt that the money will be spent where it is most needed, in aiding genuine sufferers. The churches and social workers of every class and denomination are co-operating for this purpose. This fact should appeal to those who are willing and anxious lo give, but do not know which cause is the most deserving. , The Mayor's fund has the support of all the principal organisations and social workers. Yet lliis fund is not growing as it should. No doubt many persons at the present time are experiencing difficulty. Business men are worried, and professional and salaried workers find their incomes reduced. But if they could have brought before them the dire distress suffered by many others they would realise that they themselves are comparatively fortunate. Even in limes of depression something can be spared for those whose need is greatest. This was proved when the earthquake appeal met with so ready and generous a response. It was proved again on Saturday, when a "clothing drive," organised by the Lower Hull Chamber of Commerce, secured 2300 parcels containing some 16,000 garments to replenish the Red Cross stock. Willing helpers were rewarded by this ready giving. In Wellington there are willing helpers anxious to help those in need. Their appeal for funds is one that cannot be ignored.
