SENIOR B
COLLEGE OLD BOYS,
Two of the leading teams in the senior B competition, St. Patrick's College Old Boys and Wellington College Old Boys, provided the curtain-raiser to the PetoneWellington game at Athletic Park. Jn parts the game was oE good standard, and it had its bright patches as well us its keen struggles in tight and loose. In Him: previous games St. Patrick's College Old Boys had not had a point registered against them, so that their opponents appeared to be up against a stilf proposition. This became quite evident with the progress of play in the first spell, although Wellington College Old Boys were not easily conquered. It was only on two occasions that St. Pat's penetrated the defence successfully, and on one of these M'Carthy made a fine run from midfiold for a try. The other try was scored by Dennehy. Hepburn converted both tries and also kicked two penally goals. The score at half-timo was 10-0 in favour of St.. Patrick's College Old Boys. In the second spell strenuous efforts were made by Wellington College Old Boys to wipe .off
tho deficit, but with all their advances they could not score a try. The handling was not always sure and this accounted for chances being lost. The opposition, however, was solid on defence and. maintained its record of not having its line crossed successfully this season. Wellington College Old Boys put on nine points by penalty kicks, all taken by Hawker, and gained the distinction of scoring the first points against St. Pat's Old Boys. A well-contested game ended: St. Patrick's College Old Boys, 10; Wellington College Old Boys, 9. Mr. G. H. Voyee was the referee. JOHNSONVILLE AGAIN. With superior combination in both forward and back divisions, Johnsonville had little difficulty in defeating Hutt by a good margin at Kelburn Park. Hutt, however, made a good game of it, and Johnsonvillo were often on the offensive while the valley men.battled close to the line. For the village rearguard Chancy, Parsloc, and Moore (the three-quarter line) were a tower of strength, and all but one in five tries came from movements by them. Renner at half did not connect cleanly in the opening stages, but served his backs well in the second spell. Ot tho forwards, Smith, Waldergrove, and Kenny played well all the way. Hutt's back line did not function at all until the closing stages, Allen and M'Caw being most prominent.. In the scrum Falloou, Denby, and Scott showed to advantage, l ' Hutt kicked off into the wind, Johnsonville'immediately taking the offehsiye.'The backs -were''Served,' Ghaney: and • Mason breaking away ,for. the ' latter to score in the corner:' The kick failed; 'Johnsonville 3, Hutt 0. ' The valley men "forged upfield, and.■ then 'Sutcli'ff received -from-a scrum. He passed to Avery, who ran 40-yards, beating all the opposing side to score a beautiful try well out. The '.kick went \yide. 8-3. For a while Hutt. held an advantage territorially, But Smith' took .the ball- at his^fee't.-to'half-wayi-.where iJthe Johnsonville, backs, got. moving. Chancy fcce'ived"ari:d passed to Moore, who' returned it, giving Chancy a. chance .in:the corner. The kick was short. 11-3.
