POOR FOOTBALL.
In a keenly-contested but disappointing
game Marist beat Miramar at Kilbirnie by 22 points to 17. The play was far from senior standard, and at times the game was little more than a ragged scramble. The Marist backs improved a little towards the end of the game, and combined in several bright movements. Miramar offered stiff opposition, and at one stage looked like winning. Mariat, however, came with a run at the end and scored rapidly. , There was little of interest in the play for the first ten minutes or so, and then Cuming kicked a penalty goal. Pinkerton equalised for Miramar a few minutes later. The Miramar backs, although well served by the forwards, were not handling well. From another penalty kick by Cuming the ball struck the bar and bounced over. Marist, 6; Miramar, 3. Marist were forcing matters, but their work had no polish. An infringement gave Pinkerton a chance, and he duly goaled. 6-6. rCagged up and down play followed halftime. Miramar, who had opened up smartly, came away in a loose rush, and Davidge went over behind the posts. Pinkerton goaled. 11-6. Play went up ana down the field, but Davidge soon got another chance and broke through for another try. The kick missed. 14-6. The Reds continued to hold their opponents, but Broderick got away about mid-field and raced down the side line through the Miramar team, to score behind the posts. It was a nice effort. Cuming goaled and the scores were: Miramar, 14; Marist, 11. Marist returned to the attack almost immediately and passin among the Miramar backs in their own twenty-five, allowed Broderick to intercept and go through again. The kick missed. 14-14. The Greens were now properly into their stride, and in a few minutes the ball again went to Broderick, who made another determined attempt, but was thrown out at the corner post. From the line-out Macdonald attempted to go through, but he was held up. The pressure was kept up, and Mills went round the side of a scrum, and scored under the posts. Maedonald kicked the goal. Marist, 10; Miramar, 14. Marist were now having things all their own way. From a free kick Cuming sent the ball over the post. Miramar then took a turn, and rushed play up .the field. The Marist defence went down, and Smith got over well. out. . The wind carried Pinkerton's kick astray. 19-17. There was now more life in the game, and from a scrum in mid-field Mills set the Marist backs moving, and the ball travelled along the line to Broderick, who scored in the corner. It was the best piece of combined work in the match. The kick failed, and the final whistle sounded shortly afterwards:
