NEW ZEALAND AVERAGES
DEMPSTER'S TALLY
(By "Not Out.") Bad weather is still having an effect upon the New Zealand cricket team's performances, and some valuable playing time has been lost again in the match with Glamorgan, in which Page has followed Lowry's good example in winning the toss for his side. So far as individual performances are concerned the weather has held up Dempster to some extent in his run to the 1000 mark. This batsman has now made 53S runs in the first-class matches to date -(including his 26 on Saturday), and ho has the exceptionally fine average of 107.G0. The other batsmen are a long way behind. Some have done quite wcil, but others are due for a much improved showing. The team's averages are not up to'the mark expected of a team strong in batting, but ia the matter of results the team has done remarkably well. In the bowling department Merritt stands head and, shoulders' above the others, among u'hom only one (Cromb) has taken over ten wickets. Merritt has met with, success in each innings played against New Zealand, and ho has taken thirtyeight wickets at an average of 16.44 runs. Cromb has a better average, as also ha,s Mathcson, but these two players have not been used to anything like the same extent as Merritt. Talbot, who has shapod well with tho bat, has not been a success so far with the ball, nor has Weir, who, as a solid batsman, has been given a bigger share of bowling than was expected. The two left-handed bowlers have taken only three wickets between them. Tho following are the averages: —
