DR. BUCK'S APPOINTMENT
Advices received from Honolulu give further particulars of the appointment of Dr. P. Buck (To Bangihiroa) to the Yale University.
A meeting of the- Bishop Museum : Trustees, held on 3 7th December, 1930, nominated Dr. Buck as Cornice P. Bishop Museum lecturer in Yale University for the year 1932-38 at a salary of SOOO dollars. This nomination has been approved by the Standing Committee <>» Bishop Museum at Yale University. Tho duties of tho lecturer are "to give instruction and direct research in fields of study related to problems of the Pacific area." Tho academic year involved iv the appointment, is approximately Ist October, 1!>32, to Ist June, 1933, and the financial year is Ist July, 1932, to oOtili June, HIS.'!. Dr. Buck's term of five years at the Bishop Museum expires on 30th June, 1932, so he will have three, months to spare in looking at American museums and settling down at Yale. A German anthropologist named Turnwald does the 1931-32 term, and Dr. Buck follows after him.
Professor Clark Wissler, writing to Dr. Gregory, Director <it tho Bishop Museum, about the two appointments, says: "1 know of no better candidates, and I am especially looking forward to an interesting time with Bu/sk. I hope lie will give a stiff course of lectures on material culture in the Pacific. This reminds mo that tho publication Buck has; just brought out is probably the best study in the field of material culture made for any primitive area. Buck has set a high standard, difficult to live up to. Hi 3 volume has made a distinct, impression here, and. was highly complimented by the committee "when they considered his nomination. I do not have Buck's address, but should be glad if you convey to him our appreciation."
