A DIRECT APPEAL

IN CITY AND SUBURBS

Though few of those havo undertaken a canvass of The city and suburban areas for funw'ls to help in tho relief of those in il eed have yet sent in their first instalments, they report generally that tbJu response is gratifying, considering tb .o many heavy calls which have been inado upon the generosity of the people of Wellington recently. Letters are being pa st-cd on behalf of the Mayor's Commiijl.ee to about 500 business people and otihers in the city, as a preliminary to the calls which will be made upon them b,\p canvassers next week. The commit* 'cc is also communicating with the "various district municipal associations! suggesting that they should co-operate c with district branches of the lutcJM'-Cliurch Committee, and replies have H>een receivd from several associations t3 lat they aro quite willing to adopt this' course. Tho canvassers wit 1 bo provided with printed and signed J) jrms, so that those who are called upon ,j need bo in no doubt as to the fund to v$ uch they aro asked to subscribe. Tho whole of the canvassers' work is v nder tho Finance Committee, consist! ng of the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. His* lop), Sir Alexander Roberts, Councillor,,-J. M'Eldowney, and Messrs. D. A. Ewa|a and H. H. Mirams.

To-day the Lov\? or Hutt Chamber of Commerce is engq ging in a "clothing drive," and every; house in the borr ugh will be called at ij or its "parcel" share of means for relief. .
