': David Clark, a young former deputy district attorney, is held by the poli«4i on a charge of murder after surrender!* ing for questioning for the double kiA* j ing Of Crawford and Spencer. j i —*— —t ' ' A sensation was caused at Los Aft. i geles-by the murder of Herbert Sper^i eer, former chief of staff of the "Even* ing Express," and Charles Crawford, ft! well-known figure in political circles* by an unidentified gunman who shoif them down while they were conversing in Crawford's office in Hollywood. Thq assailant ran in through the front door* fired point-blank at his victims, thaS dashed out. No motive for the crime has beetfi disclosed. Spencer, who was a veteran polioai reporter, told his colleagues that he was going out to get some "underworld, stuff." He was conversing with Crawford when a" gangster entered Craw* ford's office and began shooting, afterwards escaping in a waiting motor-car. Crawford lingered a few hours, then! died on the operating table, saying h$ knew who fired the shots, but de» clined to give the name. Last year Crawford caused th» arerst of Morris La vine, of the "Lo# Angeles Examiner," charging hint' with blackmail to the extent a£ £15,000. La vine was convicted, but; Crawford's money is still impounded^ by the Courts.
