DECARBONISING
What is said to be a simple .mil rJiu tivc method of decarbonising an engine is by tho use of a mixture of eight parts of methylated spirit and om put ot! castor oil. Tho best way to treat I.ho engine is to remove half the spark ing plugs and then mjtft some of the mixture on to the top of the pistons. Replace tho plugs, and turn the. engine :i few times and allow it to stand for about four hours to enable the mixture to soften the carbon. Then run tin engine, and tho loosened carbon will bo blown out through the exhaust, thus indicating tho effectiveness of (In; pro cess. The remaining c>lmdris <in thin be treated in the same manner. No harm will result should any of Hie mixture pass Die piston-rings inlo the lubricating oil, because the spirit will evaporate as soon as the engine warms up. The operation requires about a quarter of a pint of mixture to each large-sized cylinder, and, as the spirit and oil are obtainable at low cost, the expenditure for cleaning, out tlie cylinders is very modest.
