DAY'S GOOD THING
PORTRAY IN SPRINT
Portray was backed as a good thing in tiie Flying Handicap, the open sprint at Masterton yesterday, and so tho result proved. He drew the outside, and he and Taranto were the last to move, but the pair were out several lengths in front of Moa Bird by the time the straight was reached. In the run down to the judge nothing ever had a chance with the leaders, Portray quickly settling Taranto and romping home a couple of lengths clear of him, with a further gap of three lengths to Moa Bird. Atholspear was finishing strongly in fourth place, followed by The Dove, Staghunter, and Arajean. The winner, who was carrying the colburs of his trainer, T. Pritchard, had to cover a lot of extra ground early, but it did not make any difference to him, and he probably had quite a bit still in hand at the finish. It is easily the best effort he has yet produced, and he looks like making a worthy companion for Autopay, who is also trained by Pritchard. Arajean, a good second favourite, lost her position early through being unable to go with the field, aud was never afterwards in the hunt. The distance was not far enough for Atholspear. Moa Bird, having her first race for a year, showed she has lost none of her pace. Staghnnter dug his toes in, and would not gallop. The Dove was finishing on, but Taranto had had nearly enough.
