The amateur golf championship was marked throughout by surprise defeats of the favourites. Despite American and other foreign challengers, it will be an all-English final between two of the youngest players ever to reach this stage, De Forest, aged 24, and Martin Smith, 22.

Dc forest in the sixth round defeated Roper 2 and 1, and in the semi-final defeated Tulloch 1 up. Smith defeated Miller 2 and 1, ang M f Corinaek 1 up.
