NOT ARTISTIC
■WOMAFS-- WEAKNESS
Dr. C. A. Alington, headmaster of Eton,, speaking at tlie prize-giving at St. Monica's Girls' School, Tadworth, Surrey, recently, said: .-....■
"Wo (men) have all tho artistic qualities; you are tho practical sex. Your work lies in the running of the millions of houses all over the country. You run houses better than we run Governments. But it is _no good pretending that you aro artistic; you aro frauds if you do.
"There have been no great feminine poots or artists, and any great musicians you have had have played tho works composed for them by men. "Of course, you say that you havo had no chance. But what were you doing in tho Middle Ages? You were sitting at home while your husbands were hunting the boar, , You had your chance- then to produce some immortal work of art, but you did not do so simply because you havo not got it in you.
''But Hi ore is no more a question that women are the braver sex than that they aro the crueller in inflicting pain. Men are a race of artistic cowards, who never dare to cross the lino but must go over by the bridge. A woman will trespass, go anywhere, but a man will stop short if ho anticipates trouble for himself. "Your practical ability is shown in your skill at French. When I go across to the Continent I am at a loss to make- myself understood, but my wife speaks the language with a disarming charm which makes up for hor grammatical mistakes. Englishmen abroad should bo silent; it is the only way they will maintain their reputation of: strength. "All Englishmen aro alike. All arc slightly dnink, and slightly dishonest."
