MANY FALSE ALARMS

Calls received ■by the Central Fire Brigade during April numbered ' 74,. 10 less than the corresponding period last year. Of these 74 • calls, 41 were actual fires. Of these 22 were property fires, 5 chimney fires, and 14 gorse' and rubbish fires. In April-last year there were Cl gorse and rubbish fires, the dry autumn last year accounting for the bigger number. False alarms in April this year totalled 33, 20. of which were considered by:.the superintendent to be malicious, and 13 justifiable. In April last year false alarms totalled only 13. This increase. in the number oE false alarms has been comment? Ed upon by the Fire Board at several recent meeting^ and at to-day's meetings it was stated that advertisements had been published offering a reward for the conviction of oft'emlcvs. but as yet, without effect.
