LATE SPORTING
ON TRENTHAM, TRACK
MASTERTON PREPARATIONS
GOING WET AND HEAVY
Conditions were nearly as bad as (huy could bo at Trcn.th.ain this morning, but tho trial grass track was opened for galloping, as it was the last chance that several of the .Masterton candidates had lor a final brush up. The going; was heavy and slippery, particularly at the- top of the straight. Ephraltes was exercised before breakfast,, lie is in cxccllont order, as he demonstrated by beating Historic decisively over a roilo in lmin 45 3-sscc on Saturday morning. Lasy Pain and Spear Lad'were also allotted only steady pace work on the sand. Lady Pain is as fit and active as she has been at any time this season, and she is likely to be one of tho hardest to beat on Friday. She has not j'at raced on a wet track, but her trainer is confident sue will handle such conditions satisfactorily if they prevail at Masterton. E. Koed rides her, and also Actaeon. Aetaeon and Fairwind did six furlongs on -tlio grass at a strong halfpace, the former moving the better. E. Burgess will ride Fairwind and Spear" Lad on "Friday. ' _. Malayan, accompanied by .Tea Queen over the final couple of furlongs, ran seven furlongs in lmin 35s'ec, the last half-mile in 52 3-Ssec,, and the final three- fiulongs in ob 4-ssec. This was a 'very satisfactory trial, as Malayan ve'as. not required to do his best till the finish". Ho wilt run in the Masterton Cup", but Tea Quern has probably concluded .her season's racing. , • ATrowzone, -with, the outside running, finished better than Martian Chief over six furlongs in lmin 27scc, the last half-mile taking 57 4-ssec. ■ Neither come in till Otaki.
THE DOVE VERY WELL,
The .Dove, ivho is temporarily stationed at Ticnthani, diet the last five of six furlongs in lmin 11 2-sscc, but was not extended. The going did not appear to trouble her, and she looks very fit. Earthquake accompaniediJner across the Strait, but aa the nominations for Otaki were missed the pair will return after , Masterton. Earthquake is not engaged at Masterton. Lady Noel, who has grown into a very big filly, sprinted three furlongs alone in 40 l>ssec. She may race at Otaki. Historic was ■well beaten over seven furlongs by Staghun'ter, who drew right away from him early and kept-him four or five lengths .off in the run down the straight.' The time was lmin 36 1-5 sec) the final half-mile being done in 52 3-ssce. Historic looks well in spite of his recent .poor track showings, and it should not be overlooked that he can usually be relied on to do his best on race day. B. H. Morris rides him in the Masterton Cup. - Staghunter's race has not yet been decided. If ho starts in the hurdles, A.. Jenkins will be on him, and if the sprint is chosen K." J. Macldo will have the mount.. Normandy and- Red Sun, who have no near engagements, did half a mile at a steady working pace. Moab Queen did similar work. Henry of .Navarre and. Hinewehi sprinted five furlongs together in lmin 9sec, the last half-mile taking 55sec. L. G. Sinclair rides Hinewehi on Friday. This will-be the first public run the sister- to Pakitere has had. 1 Azure and Brighl Song, who have no near engagements, sprinted three, furlongs down the straight. Granado and Lyrical went half a mile up, the back in 56sec. K. Voitre rides Granado in the Novice Stakes on Friday . - Acis sprinted from the seven furlongs to the half-mile, but was not. timed. W. J. M'Dowell will be on him in the Novico Stakes, in which he will be bracketed with Granado.
MORNING'S BEST TRIAL,
The best gallop of the morning was that in which Eminent and Zophyrus rattled off five furlongs in lmin 6 2-5 sec, the last half-mile in 52 3-ssec. The track was in a very bad state when they worked. Ijm;nent faltered in the straight,-but- gathered in--Zephyniß again before the post was reached. W. J. M.' Do well rides Eminent, and B. H. Morris Zephyrus. . ■ -. Master of Arts shaded Joie de Val at the end of six furlongs in-lmin 23 2-5 sec, the last half-milo in 56sec. This was a good trial by Master of -Arts; but Joie de Val could probably have finished on terms had she been urged. 11. Gray is oxpected to be on both horses at Masterton,.and in this case the former will give him his first chance-on Friday of bringing his season's winning rides to the oentury mark. I*ady Rene, who has made- much' improvement as the result of-her, recent racing at Kelson and Blenheim, ran seven furlongs in lmin 40sec, the" last h*.]f-inilo in 55 3-ssec. B. J. Maekie will be on her in the Lawn Handicap at JMastcrton. Hymgroat and Miss Hastings sprinted half a mile up the back in 54see. They may conic in on the second day at Masterton. ."Shootist and Royal Game set out from the seven furlongs post in front of Black Mint, and the last-named lost ground on them all the way, finishing a dozen lengths in the rear. Shootist was a.head better than Royal Game- at the end, the full distance taking lmin 37sec, S. "Wilson will rids Shootist, and W. H. Jones Royal Game on Saturday. J. Gunn will be on Black Mint.1 Wilson has also been engaged for The Sun, who, did only steady pace work this morning. A. Jenkins goes to Opunako next week, where one of hid mounts will be Callapat in the hurdles.
