STATE LOTTERY

"NOT DIGNIFIED OR. ■• HONEST" -

By nine votes to seven, the Dominion: Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union last evening rejected a. Manawatu remit that State lotteries on the principle of the Queensland State lotteries should be instituted, the whole of the proceeds to go to the hospital and charitable aid boards, thus relieving the land of that charge.

Supporting the remit, Mr. O. Lynefc said that tens of thousands of pounds were going over to Australia, and there was no reason why the money should not be kept in circulation in New Zealand. . :■'■■■

Mr. N. Campbell said that another point was that a 5s ticket in, a wellknown -Australian consultation, cost 6s. 6d in New Zealand.

Mr. H. E. Blyde: "How do you know?" (Laughter.)

The remit was supported by several other delegates. The. first argument against the proposal, said the president (Mr.; W. J. Poison, M.P.), was that it was quite undesirable to provide funds for the social services of the State by such, means. He did not want to »cc tha; thing get into the blood of the nation. Surely they could devise a reasonable way of finding the money for the np« keep of the- various institutions. Hff did not think it was dignified or honest to encourage the raising of revenue by; means of a lottery. "I admit .it is tempting," he added, "but I don't think we should yield to it."

Mr. W. Morrison remarked that th« youth of the country paid too much attention to sport as it was.
