Despite the threatened cleavage in ihe Nationalist ranks owing to the sudden disaffection in Canton, the first National People's Convenlion opened al Nankingamid scenes of the greatest enthusiasm, Chiang Kai-shek receiving a tremendous ovation. Among those present were the British, French, and Japanese Ministers. The living Buddha, resplendent in bright yellow, robes, was an unexpected feature. ■ In Chiang's opening address extraordinary emphasis was laid; on the progress of the Soviet Government in recent years. Regarding what he described as the remarkable success of the Soviet's five-year plan, Chiang urged delegates to pay special attention to the achievement of the Soviet in developing communications and industries in ( the vicinity of. Chinese Turkestan and Mongolia.. '; He also exhorted delegates to work for the.complete abrogation of for-
eign treaties.' .
