RED CROSS AFFAIRS
Mr. N. 'Grant presided at a meeting of the Wellington branch of the Red Cross, held on Friday afternoon. The secretary (Captain M. S. Galloway) reported on the formation of branches of the lied Cross at Napier, Hastings, Palmerston North, Wanganui, Dannevirke, and Pahiatua. Well-attended meetings had been held, and strong committees set up. Several requests had been received for the secretary to assist in reviving the ivork of the Ked Cross in other centres. . I Keports received from the Hawera, New Plymouth, and Upper Hutt branches gave details of the p year's activities. It was decided to incorporate these reports in the annual report of the Wellington district. , ' . ,lt was stated that a^ letter had been received from the matron of the Pukcora Sanatorium pointing out that application had been made to the relief committee at Napier for clothing for earthquake sufferers who had been transferred to the sanatorium. Several weeks had elapsed, and the articles, required had not' arrived, so the. secretary had obtained- the necessary clothing and Kent it to 'Napier. The secretary's action in this matter was approved. Several .special: cases, it was reported, 'had been., brought -to 'notice regarding necessities-required in the earthquake area. Beddings, boots, and clothing to the value of £75 had been sent to the Red Cross distributing depot at _ Napier. A cablegram was received from Dr. Collins, in London, congratulating the society J on its work during the earthquake. J A donation of £3 towards the earthquake fund was received from the Junior Red Cross link, at Tarland. Tarland, it was stated in an accompanying letter, was a little country village in the agricultural district of Cromer, in Aberdeenshire, and therefore the children were not able. to give much, but they were interested in the. work of the Junior Red Cross in New Zealand, and extended their sympathy in the earthquake disaster. Prince.Tokugawa, a vice-president of the Japanese Red Gross Society, wrote expressing sympathy with sufferers in the Hawkes Bay earthquake, and sent a donation of 500 yen (about. £40). collected by the Japanese Society. The following donations to the earthquake relief fund were received:—Siamese Red Cross, £37 10s; Egyptian Red Cross, £27 16s; French Red Cross, 20,000 francs; and 250 dollars received from Mrs. Ayers through the American Red Cross.
