CABLE REPAIRS
WORK NEARLY COMPLETE
An abnormal swell, probably the result of stormy weather to the south of New Zealand, spoilt the working conditions for the cable steamer Iris, which left early in the week for Cook Strait to complete her repair work, although the weather in the Strait was ideal. The Iris returned' to. port last night, the thick weather which camo up yesterday hiding the landmarks and making it impossible to carry on.
While waiting for the weather to clear the, Iris is lying at the Pi pi ton Wharf discharging about seven miles of cable lifted-from the sea-bed. Although the cable is old, much, of it is in good order, and will be used by the Post and Telegraph Department where necessary for short length communications around the coast.
The Iris has completed repairs to the three cables in Titahi Bay and Oteronga Bay, and the only job left is to lay a land end at Oteronga Bay and run out 17 miles of cable to connect with a lino from White Bay, the sea end of which has been buoyed. The Iris will then return to Auckland.
