HOSPITAL COSTS
BEDTTCED LEVY
RELIEF TO LOCAL BODIES
The 'Welilngton Hospital Board received this afternoon a letter from the Minister of Health renewing a request that the estimates of the board for the current year should be reduced from £144.623 to ,£129,780, a reduction of £14,834. This estimated expenditure is for maintenance only, no amount for capital expenditure being included. At a special meeting of the board last week it was stated that the estimates had been cut down as low as possible. The actual amount expended for social welfare last year, mostly in connection with unemployment, was £39,422. It was estimated that under this head the sum required this year, owing to the increase in unemployment, would be £4,5,000. The Minister, as stated, has renewed his request for a- reduction of the estimates to £129,789.
It is understood that the board, under pressure, will comply with the requirements of the Government. This will mean a, further, reduced, levy on local bodies of about £6000. The levy had already been reduced by £5000.
