Saturday will see the first games played in the AVellington ..Association's 1931 competitions. Prom the advance reports, teams should be in good condition to give some excellent exhibitions, The number of entries in all grades is 120, one more than Jast yeur. Bryinay lias come up to senior A grade this year, and if their standard of play is equal to that of last season, which saw them champions of senior B, they will prove their right to be regarded as a formidable nine. General Meeting. A general meeting of the Wellington Basketball Association convened to consider alterations to the rules of the association, was hold at Bryinay social room on Monday last. The following clubs wore represented: Seatoun, Waacs, Knox, V.Gym, Melrose, Bryinay, Brooklyn P. 8., Berhampore, Queen's, Hospital, Wesley, Gilby's, Kia Ora, Huddart Parker, Boseneath, Training College, Wellington East, Wenerei, Y.W.C.A. Also present were the following members of the executive: Mesdames H. D. Muir (president), E. M. Smith (secretary), A. Muir (treasurer), Misses M. Clieesoman (assistant-secretary), Frederick, Madson, M'Tigue, Armstrong, Lithgow, Clarke, and Parker. A motion "That the executive havo power to appoint any additional assistant secretaries when necessary," was passed unanimously. Mrs. Smith moved "That each club be entitled to two delegates to any general meeting of tho association, with voting power according to the size of the club, under the following graduated scale: 1 vote for each five teams or part thereof." Miss Lithgow seconded. An amendment moved by Mrs. Allan and seconded by Miss M'Tigue, "That each club bo entitled to two delegates with ono vote each irrespective of the size of the club," was lost. In speaking to the motion, Miss Madson said that small clubs, with one or two votes were disheartened when; large clubs held:up to 20 votes. The' motion'was lost by 39 votca t0..32.^ . As so few entries had been received for the seventh and eighth grades owing to age restrictions, the meeting agreed that the seventh grade be* an open grade, and that the 'eighth grade be restricted to players under 16 on Ist April. As this alteration will cause readjustments in various grades of the clubs, it was.decided ttiat applications for re-grading will be received up to 4 p.m. on Monday, 4th May, any matches played on Saturday affected by the change to be regarded as friendly games only. . Owing to the vacancy on the executive caused through the appointment of Miss Cheeseman.as assistant-secretary, Miss Ferguson was appointed as delegates' representative. REFEREES' ASSOCIATION. Tko annual meeting of the Wellington Basketball Beferees' Association was held recently. Owing to the ab-, sence of Mr. i\ Elvines, convenor, the meeting appointed Mr. A. J. Froud to the chair. Mr. and Mrs. V. B. Boyce, late president and secretary respectively of the Napier Basketball Association, were welcomed, as were Messrs. J. M'Pherson and G. B. Arrowsmith, new members. Those present included Misses Brimer, Akel, Madson, M'Tigue, Armstrong, Leslie, Mesdames H. D. Muir and A. Muir, Messrs. Johnson, Steel, Moiler, Bryant, and Horniblow. The annual report, which was adopted, stated that the 1930 season had been a very successful year,-and ono of which members could be proud. At the end of the season the membership numbered 31, but with the continued increase in teams expected, the association will need .'to .increase accordingly to meet the demands upon the services

of members. . ■. •.. ■■,' ' . . A vote of thanks was passed to Miss M. M'Tigue for her-services,aa secretary during 1930. On behalf of. the executive of the AV.B.A., Mrs. H. D. Muir thanked the association for their work for basketball in Wellington, and assured the meeting that the executive thoroughly appreciated the service given by the referee. It was unanimously decided that the continued growth of the association mado it necessary that it become a properly constituted body, and it was decided, on the motion of Mr. AY. J. Bryant, that a committee, consisting of three members of the Referees' Association and three members :of tho1 executive of theAV.B.A.., be appointed to draw up a draft constitution, such draft to he submitted to all members for perusal before the next 'general meeting. This committee will carry on the work started by the. tentative committee formed last year.. On the' suggestion of Mrs. H. D. Muir, it was agreed to ask Mr. V. B. Boyee to act as independent chairman, subject to . the apr proval of the executive, of the W.B.A/ Miss Armstrong . brought before thO meeting two interpretations of rules decided by the council of the N.Z.B.A. In the past, when the ball in being thrown oft' from the centre, goes into tho next base without being touehed,by another player,-the penalty has been to give the ,throw-off to the other side. Now; the penalty is a free pass in the 'centre court nearest the spot where the breach occurred.' The other chaugo is in regard to the 12ft line—now a player may jump to catch the ball and land. ■ inside the i2ft distance, providing she catches the ball before her feet touch the ground. The election of officers', resulted: —- President, Mr. A. J. Eroud; vice-presi-dent, Miss P. Madson; secretary-treas-urer, Miss M. M'Tigue; executive members, Messrs. Bryant, M'Pherson, and Johnson; constitution committee, Messrs. Bryant, Froud, and Steel.
