FIRE POLICE

SWEARING-IN CEREMONY

Tho annual .swearing-in ceremony of the Wellington Volunteer Fire Police was held in the central brigade room last evening. Among those present were Messrs. N.W. Nelson, chairman of tho Wellington Fire Board, J. S. Fairchild, secretary of the board, W. Hildroth, JVEoffc, Superintendent J. Creeke, and Captain^. Wright.

The swearing-"in ceremony was conducted by Mr. Nelson. In,proposing tho toast of the "Wellington Volunteer Fire Police," Mr. Crceko said that tho movement was started 21 years, ago, and two of the founders', Mr. Hildreth and Captain Wright, wore present.thatevening. An oxample of the typical devotion to duty that characterised tho members of the polico was that of tho late Lieutenant Asher, who served for a great number of years, and was available for duty abnost up to tho time of his death. Captain Wright replied to tho toast. ■ Toasts honoured were those of "Tho King," "Tho Mayor and Councillors," proposed by Mr. J. W. Key, and replied to by Mr!- .Hildreth, "Tlio Wellington Fire Board," proposed by Captain Wright-and replied to by Mr. Nelson, "The Fire Brigade," proposed by Mr. W. Churchill and replied to by DeputySuperintendent Clarke, and "The Ambulance." During/the evening a number of musical items wore given.
