When William HI. had to finance his wars with France he induced Parliament to levy a bachelor tax, which remained in force from 1605 till 1706. The impost was graded according to rank, and it ranged from a tax of 12 guineas a year on archbishops and dukes down to 15s on "gentlemen," and a mere shilling on "other persons." To prevent the victims from escaping into matrimonial immunity a new tax was imposed on marriage, so that fin archbishop or duke who married had to pay £50 for the privilege and a gentle,mau 22s 6d.
