RELIEF WORKS

PAYING THE LEVY

HOSPITAL BOARD'S HELP

Under the resumption of the Unemployment Board's No. 5 scheme, : approximately 1000 men—two, three, and four-day men—were allocated jobs yesterday and to-day. The main jobs were at Hataitai, Sutherland road, Wilton block, Northland, Corporation yard, Ngahauranga, Onslow, Wellington East Girls'. College, and the Boys' College. As the result of representations made to-day, the Social Welfare Committee of the Wellington Hospital Board decided to help unemployed workers to pay their . quarterly levy.

Messrs. J. I. Goldsmith and Jordan, representing the Unemployment Committee, suggested that the Hospital Board should pay tho levy and the "Unemployment Committee would take an order from the men for the payment of the amount, the levy to be deducted from their first pay, and the money then to be refunded to the Hospital Board. ,

After consideration, the Social Welfare Committee carried the following resolution: "That, subject '■ to the suggested arrangement for repayment '■ by the City Council and other employers through the Unemployment Committee, the Hospital Board will, without prejudice, pay the levy for a limit of 400 men, the scheme to- operate for the March quarter payment only, and then to be reviewed."

Mr. G-. Petherick, who presided, congratulated the local Unemployment Committee on the way it was handling a -very difficult and thankless job
