WAIRARAPA HIGH SCHOOL
The first reunion of old pupils of "he Wairarapa High School was held i.>.st night. Besides those now resident in Wellington, approximately forty from Masterton attended. The chairman, Mr. A. H. Fear, apologised for the absence of Dr. Uttley and Miss E. 0. Sutherland. Speakers paid glowing references to the work of Dr. Uttley, in whose hands as the first headmaster had rested to a very large extent the moulding of the character and spirit of a new school. In proposing the toast of the school, Mr. IT. J. M'Whinnio said that the results and achievements of the school since its brief inception were in many ways incredible, i Mr. G. E. Sykes, M.P., replying, said that the veal .'ultimate aim of education was the development, of character aud good citizenship. In proposing the toast of the headmaster and the staff, Miss D. Martyn-Roberts said that it was a relief to many old pupils when they knew that Mr. Toinlinson was to replauf. Dr. Uttley as head of the school. T.jK success of the school was due to the eiU.usiasm and co-opera-tion of the staff. Replying, Mr. H. B. Tomlinsoii, emphasised that ijie ground work bad been clone by Dr. Uttley, and said lie was proud to be associated with a school with such a fine spirit. He hoped that an Old Pupils' Day would be inaugurated. Reply on behalf of the staff was made by Mr. G. W. Moricc. After other toasts had been honoured, dancing was indulged in until midnight, the music being supplied by Messrs. Falloon, Scholefield, and Green.
