"POSITION DESPERATE"
'&. protest against the Goyernmont'i proposals, to reduce the subsidy to hospital boards has been received, from the Auckland Hospital Board by tha Deputy-Leader of the Parliamentary; Labour Party (Mr. At. J. Savage). In a telegram to Tvlr. Savage, the Auckland Board protested against being asked to reduce its expenditure b* £60,000. The reduction made' the position impossible and meant that itlio board would have to close down 200 beds in the hospital and reduce outdoor relief by 50 per cent. The position, stated the telegram, was desperate.
Mr. Savage roplied, inter alia, as follows: "Very much regret present position re Hospital Board's subsidies. .Reductions have been made after most desperate opposition by self and colleagues in House. We have taken every jjossible step to prevent what appeari 1 o be an uneconomic and disastrous pol* icy, bnt have- been defeated. Will con* itinne to raise the matter at everjr opI portnnity." . , ■' '
